I have always been curious about the world at large. As much as I enjoy the comforts of growing up in a stable socioeconomic class, a part of me wants to experience the opposite end of the spectrum: the severe poverty that strikes third-world countries. While I alone am unable to change the status of their poverty, I am able to offer something else: Hope, compassion, and love.
In preparation for my trip, I have purchased a plethora of toys, activities, and crafts for the children. In addition, we will be bringing over several bags of sports equipment. Recently, my dad has been working to bring baseball to Nairobi, Kenya. Prior to his efforts, the Masai tribe people had never even heard of baseball, much less had the opportunity to play it. Thanks to my dad's charity project, "Gear for Goals", the Masai children now have the equipment needed to play recreational sports. I am enthused knowing that I will soon be able to engage with them out on the field!
As I prepare for my trip, the question arises, "What do I hope to gain from this?" My answer is simple: Perspective. I hope that as you follow me on my travels and read about my experience in a third-world country, you too will see life through a new lens.
